The Indian Liberal Group (ILG) is an organisation founded on 10th December 1965 by the late Minoo Masani, author and parliamentarian to promote the Liberal point of view on issues of the day and to educate the public on the concept of Liberalism.
The ILG seeks to emphasise the fact that a market economy by itself does not ensure an open society; that a free economy and a free society are two sides of the same coin; and that a free and democratic society alone will ensure a satisfying standard of life for the people.
Among the founding members of the Group were Prof. B. R. Shenoy, Mr. H.V.R. Iengar, Dr. Fredie Mehta, Mr. Khushwant Singh and Madame Sophie Wadia.
When official policy is in the direction of a market economy, the ILG's task is to explain the implications of a market driven economy; why the process of economic liberalisation needs to be supported; keep a critical watch on measures that could derail the progress of economic reforms and make Liberalism understood and accepted by the people, not only as a method of economic engineering, but also as a philosophy of governance that promotes a civil society.
