Pandit Motilal Nehru
(1861-1931)

One of the most important of vakils, he was to be admitted to the Allahabad High Court in 1896 and earned a fabulous income. This towering personality was a great support to the moderates in the politics of the United Provinces, where he had a pervasive influence. He was associated with Annie Besant.s Home Rule League and helped Mahatma Gandhi in the unofficial inquiry into the Punjab disturbances. At the cost of his lucrative legal practice, he helped in defending scores of helpless victims of the Martial Law (following the Jallianwala Massacre) who were condemned either to the gallows or long terms of imprisonment. He found the non-cooperation movement irresistible. He founded the Swaraj Party in 1923 and headed the committee to prepare a Constitution for free India, called the Nehru Report.
