Born in Calcutta, this distinguished Anglo Indian is regarded with pride by the Bengalis. Educated in the Scottish Dharmotola Academy, he excelled in the study of history, philosophy and English literature. At the age of 14, he went on employment to Bagalpore and published poems in English, which were much acclaimed. In 1826, he got employed in the Hindu College at Calcutta and taught English and History. In a few days, he distinguished himself as a teacher and his students worshipped him. Within the college and at home, he unlocked the philosophy and thinking of Adam Smith, Bentham, Berkeley, Locke, Hume and electrified a whole new generation in the new thoughts flowing from the West.

Young Bengal as his students were called, distinguished themselves in public life. Compelled to resign his teaching position, he contributed to a number of journals. He died at the age of 23 and in this short period, he completely metamorphosized the mental outlook of Bengal.
