WTO - Yes! But Let’s Proceed Carefully

The WTO seems to have become the favourite whipping boy for any and all ills of our economy. Most of the time, the denunciation of the WTO emanates from vested interests like trade unions and the new class of corrupt politicians, corrupt businessmen and corrupt bureaucrats, fathered by 40 years of the Socialistic Pattern of Society who have much to lose in a free economy.

Whether one likes it or not the WTO is here to stay. Technology, in many ways, has brought the concept of one world closer. Trade and commerce across borders, globalization in other words, is the order of the day. This being the case India cannot return to the bad old days of autarky. On the other hand being part of the WTO means ensuring that we do our homework before stating our case. The vested interests have been feeding the public with a lot of nonsense and the climate of change has generated many uncertainties, In such a situation what is important is to educate ourselves on what the WTO is all about. This is the essential purpose of this cover feature. Ed.
